Can the Diva do it: a hattrick in the air
If Makybe Diva does it to-day, history will be made. No horse has ever won three Melbourne Cups - and a win to-day would be three consecutive Melbourne Cups. Martin Flanagan is a keen observer of Australian life and culture. Read him here to think about what it all means. And he says it is a gender issue. Now I think that is nice. We have that big strong male hero, Phar Lap. Flanagan is almost certainly correct. Nothing will unseat Phar Lap in the heart of an Australian. And we never forget the perfidy of the Americans in regard to his death. But if the Diva wins to-day there will be a great lady by his side. Now I think that is neat - and a peculiarly Australian symbol of equality.
